Living with NO EXCUSES - The story of Jackie.

img.jpg

SUCH an inspiration!!!

This lady is out there getting it done and living with NO EXCUSES!

And if this picture isn’t enough to inspire you, then maybe the words from the woman in it will. Here is the reply from Jackie herself (pictured) in response to all the Facebook comments (some positive, others negative) when this very same photo was shared on the Swim Bike Mom page – just had to share.

“Thank you Swim Bike Mom for posting this [picture of me.] I am humbled and proud to be an inspiration and actually quite appalled at how some of the posters are treating this. I used to weigh 415 lbs. [and] walking to the mailbox was a struggle. Some people don’t just ‘let themselves go’ …[they] have actual medical issues that prevent normal every day activities. Say what you will but I got off my ass and did it.

And I consistently do it. I do it for me, not you …and I inspire and amaze myself every day at how far I am able to push my body mentally [and] physically. I feel bad for people who can’t look at any picture of ANY athlete and not be inspired.

Honestly, hearing how this photo has inspired folks, I hope it goes viral! I want everyone to know that it IS ok to be any size and still compete. I am comfortable enough with myself to truly appreciate any praise I get from athletes who [have] finished while I’m still out there encouraging me. Triathlons are truly the only sport I have ever been involved in where people genuinely care about others…I am proud of myself, my unbelievably supportive teammates at the Atlanta Triathlon Club and those online like Swim Bike Mom who takes this for what it is. Inspiration for anyone to get out there and do it. If I can inspire just one person, then I have fulfilled my purpose.

I don’t hear [the] negativity, only the passion I have in my head and heart to achieve anything I set my mind to. I would encourage anyone to watch my progress as I train for the Half Ironman in Augusta on September 30th. Many people half my size wouldn’t even dream of trying to even enter such an event. But I’M DOING IT! First, last, dnf, at least I started and will continue to follow my dreams…. FOR ME.

I hope that all of us encourage others to be their best and are proud that ANYONE attempts these activities. If you can’t applaud every athlete, especially those of us who it takes twice as long to finish and twice as much effort to move twice as much weight across the line, then I feel sad for you that you can’t appreciate the beauty in life and everyone’s journey. FYI the day after this race, I swam the Ridges 5k open water swim from GA to NC… so anything is possible if you put your mind to it!!! I wish all of you good luck and hope to hear about all of your successes (and not so successes on your journeys) as well!!! -Love, Jackie”

If you are a Facebook fan you already know that my husband Jayson does the cooking in our house.  It wasn’t always that way. Beachbody Coach FAQ's.

img.png

Thinking about being a BeachBody coach?  I’m sure you have LOTS of questions and hopefully I can answer them here.  Here’s a list of my frequently asked questions.

What Is Team BeachBody??

Team Beachbody is the crazy successful distribution company for the even more successful “Beachbody”. Beachbody is the company behind home fitness programs such as P90X, Insanity, Brazil Butt Lift, Body Beast, ChaLEAN Extreme, Turbo Fire and P90X2.  Team Beachbody also distributes exercise equipment and nutritional supplements manufactured by Beachbody.

How did you get into this?

I started my journey with Shakeology at the beginning of 2012.  I was running and eating healthy,  but I couldn’t lose any weight until I added Shakeology once a day.  I lost 30 pounds in 4 months just by adding Shakeology.  Then I continued on with P90X.  I lost another 6 pounds and toned up my body.  I became STRONG, not just THIN.  I signed on as a coach because I felt so much happiness and satisfaction in FINALLY reaching my goal.

WHY are you a coach?

I hope to inspire others to set & accomplish goals, and I think a great place to start is with fitness & health!  I truly believe once people set a fitness goal and achieve it, they will see themselves differently.  They will set loftier goals and be set on a path of greatness!  Being a Team BeachBody coach gives me the opportunity to inspire people, help them get in shape, and help others see themselves for the champions that they are.  It is extremely satisfying to see people change their lives and I get to be a part of that!

Do you make money being a BeachBody coach??

YES!  BeachBody is unique because you not only have that opportunity to be SIGNIFICANT in the lives of others, but you can be SUCCESSFUL too!  There is a TREMENDOUS opportunity to make a REAL income being a Beachbody Coach.  But if you’re looking to make a fast buck and get rich quick, then this is not for you.  But as you can see in the Statement of Independent Coach Earnings for the past year, there are several coaches making well over a six figure income.  The structure is there to be making over a million dollars a year, it’s all a matter of how hard you are willing to work!  So commit to “Be Here in A YEAR”, that means give this business 100% for a year, and you will be AMAZED!

So are you just doing this for the money??

NO.  I did not need a job when I got into this.  I did not “fall victim to a multi-level marketing business scam”.  I am doing this because it is the best avenue I can see to help the masses!  THAT is my motivation.

Of course, being financially successful IS important though.  I know there are several people that NEED to know how to make money, so I am determined to be financially successful so I can lead the way for others to find that financial success as well.

I know it is important because I have personally been on both ends of the financial spectrum.  My husband used to make GREAT money.  We had a beautiful big home, nice cars and a fat savings account.  And about 3 or 4 years ago, we hit hard times.  In fact, we went without income for 2 YEARS.  That’s a long time!  We had savings, but that only lasted for so long.  We were lucky to have food storage and we lived off that.  But I felt worthless that I couldn’t go get a decent job!  There was nothing I could do to bring us out of our financial situation because I am a college drop-out.  My work experience consists of being a waitress at Denny’s & Applebees.  My husband is an entrepeanuer and was trying to start up some different businesses, so it wasn’t like he was just sitting around… it’s just nothing was bringing in any money!  I did teach piano lessons, but that little bit of money bought us diapers and milk, it didn’t pay any bills.  Things were really really rough for a long time.  In fact, there were a few times I remember going around our house, collecting light bulbs and batteries that had not been opened, and returning them to Walmart for a little bit of cash to buy a few neccessities.  We really struggled to say the least.

Through that experience I have learned the value and importance of money.  Money brings peace of mind and freedom.  I never want to be in a situation like that again!  I don’t ever want to feel helpless again, like there’s nothing I can do.  I don’t ever want to worry again about putting food on the table for my kids.  I don’t ever want to worry again if today’s the day we will be kicked out of our house.  I don’t ever want to worry again about the possibility of being homeless.

Since then my husband has found a good steady job, but Beachbody is what will bring us that financial security and freedom.  But honestly, personal financial success as a BeachBody coach may be rewarding, but not as rewarding as seeing my team earn money and start their own path to financial freedom.  That’s the part of the financial success that excites me!  Seeing the coaches I sign up find success – THAT is a GREAT feeling.  :)

Should I be a Beachbody coach??

The fact is, life is about choices and decisions. The following video presents just another choice. But the decision is up to you whether you become a Team Beachbody coach or not.  I’ve already made my decision.  And while I have found success early on, I know it is nothing compared to where I will be in a year and two years from now.  That is for certain because the foundation has been set.  The only question here is one YOU have to answer.  Is the right thing for you??

How does this business work??

Born to Run!

img.jpg

I’ve signed up for another half marathon!!
Today I signed up for the Pocatello Just Cuz Half Marathon November 3rd in Pocatello, Idaho.

I’m pretty excited because one of my friends is dong that race as well.  I’m still working on getting back that running mojo… but it’ll come.

Fact is – P90X is a great workout, but nothing beats running for me.  It’s almost like meditation for me.  It truly does give me mental strength.  I have so many inspired ideas and moments when I run!  It’s been a life saver for me.  Whenever I am stressed or having a bad day…. running makes it all better.  :)

I’m really excited to get back in the running groove and be more consistent in my runs.  I loved training and getting up at 4:45 in the morning, out the door by 5.  I ALWAYS had good days whenever I ran first thing!

I would love to improve on my time though.  My first half marathon I ran it in 2 hours and 5 minutes.  My second half marathon I ran it in 2 hours and 30 seconds.  This time I want to be UNDER that 2 hours mark.  :)

So here goes nothing.  Wish me luck!!!

The power of small simple choices.

img.jpg

Rarely does someone have a life altering moment where everything changes for them in ONE  day.  Rather, people move forward and reach their goals by taking it ONE STEP AT A TIME.  One little simple choice after another little simple choice.  And over time, those small simple choices compound to bring them success.

So move forward.  Pay attention to the small and simple choices you make everyday.  Because they are either bringing you CLOSER to your goal, or further away.  And one day you will wake up and wonder how you got there.

If you’re looking to get a balance of protein, fat, and carbs for each snack, halve the portions and combine nuts, cheese, or lean meats with the fruit-forward treats!

Summer Snack

Not only will these keep you from craving that double scoop of mint chocolate chip, they’ll help keep your hunger at bay while you’re in and out of the water or soaking up the sun. Just don’t forget the sunscreen.

Got a cooler? If you’re packing an ice chest, try these refreshing treats that will cool you down when it feels like you’re about to melt in the afternoon sun.

  1. Jicama SaladFrozen grapes. With a taste just like sorbet, frozen grapes make a tasty snack!  Just rinse some grapes, toss them in a plastic bag, and throw them in the freezer. Hours later, you’ll have a chilly, low-calorie snack. 1 cup of grapes equals 62 calories.
  2. Jicama salad. Chop 1 cup of jicama and add a splash of lemon juice and a pinch of salt for a tangy, crunchy salad. Those 50 calories will give you a blast of energy to get back in the pool for one more round of Marco Polo.
  3. Mediterranean salad. Go Greek and dice 1 medium tomato, half a red onion, and 1 cucumber. Top with 1 ounce of low-fat feta cheese and a pinch of salt. Trust me, it tastes way more decadent than its 146 calories.
  4. Dates and prosciutto. If you want something with more of a savory flavor, wrap 1 piece of prosciutto around a date for a bite that combines sweet and salty. Your taste buds will love you for it. Each one is approximately 50 calories.
  5. Watermelon twist. Even on its own, watermelon is such a great summer food. It’s low in calories, full of water, and high in vitamin C. To add some protein and fat, top 1 cup of watermelon with 1 ounce of crumbled feta for a treat less than 100 calories.
  6. Caprese. The Italians know what they’re doing when it comes to eating healthy. Moderation, moderation, moderation! For this savory snack with a little bite, top 1 ounce of fresh mozzarella cheese with 1 cup of cherry tomatoes and 1 tablespoon of your favorite balsamic vinegar.
  7. Shakeology. Why not bring the Healthiest Meal of the Day to the beach? Just mix half of a serving of your favorite flavor with water for a nutrient-packed snack that’s 70 to 85 calories.
  8. Stuffed tomatoes. Tomatoes are packed with cancer-busting antioxidants, and when they’re stuffed with this vegetarian-friendly recipe for olive and quinoa salad from Cookie + Kate, they’ve also got the protein and fat to keep you going all day. The easy-to-make snack is just 112 calories a serving.
  9. Berries. Feeling the heat? Munch on 1 cup of strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries for an antioxidant-friendly, refreshing treat that’s under 100 calories. Simple and delicious!

  11. Gazpacho. This tomato-based soup is like a soup version of V8, only without the preservatives and sodium. It’s jam-packed with tons of vegetables and will help you feel hydrated even on the hottest of days. Follow this recipe and you’ll have a low-cal soup in less than 30 minutes.
  12. Pickles. Want a practically calorie-free snack? Munch on some pickles! They’re sweet and salty, and their delectable crunch makes them a fun snack to eat while you’re sitting on the shore or lounging poolside.
  13. Gelatin dessert. For a sweet treat, enjoy the jiggle of a gelatin-based dessert like JELL-O without adding extra jiggle to you at 80 calories or less. Though many products on the market have artificial ingredients, you can find better versions at natural food stores like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s.

Going cooler-free? These snacks will keep your hunger at bay for when you’re not planning to bring a cooler.

  1. Summer FruitCinnamon apple. Sprinkle an apple with cinnamon for a treat that tastes like apple pie, but with only 70 tiny calories and no added sugar.
  2. Juicy fruit. Try 1 cup of unsweetened applesauce with a hint of cinnamon for a 100-calorie snack. Just make sure to read the ingredients, as many applesauce brands contain added sugar or high-fructose corn syrup.
  3. Nuts. A handful of 40 pistachios or 20 raw almonds will provide you with the protein and fat your body needs to fuel your fun in the sun.
  4. Olives. Get some healthy fats into your system by munching on 16 olives! Choose pitted ones to leave yourself with less to clean up.
  5. Peanut, almond, or cashew butter. For a super quick snack, grab a spoonful of nut butter. This protein-rich treat will give you energy. Even the all-natural versions have that great blend of salty and sweet for just 95 calories.
  6. Roasted chickpeas. Mix together olive oil, spices, and chickpeas on a baking sheet, roast them in your oven for 35 minutes, and you’ll have a guilt-free snack high in fiber and antioxidants that’s approximately 150 calories per quarter-cup serving.
  7. Bell pepper with balsamic vinegar. Drizzle 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar over sliced bell peppers for a treat high in vitamin C and low in calories. 1 marinated bell pepper is equal to about 40 calories.
  8. Avocado toast. Mash 1/4 of an avocado onto 1 slice of whole wheat or sprouted-grain toast and sprinkle it with Espellete pepper for a 120-calorie omega-3 friendly snack.
  9. Water Water. Don’t forget about hydration! If you’re going to be in the sun, it’s critical to make sure you’re replenishing your water supply whether or not you’re splashing around in the waves. Unless you want a midday headache, that is. Drink iced cold water, iced tea, coconut water, or sparkling water to rehydrate.

Interview With Shakeology Co-Creator Darin Olien

The Superfood Sleuth: An Interview with Shakeology Co-Creator Darin Olien

By Denis Faye

Darin Olien knows more than you do.

Or at least that’s what it feels like when you sit down with Shakeology’s master architect to discuss the best-selling Beachbody supplement’s latest formulations. One minute he’s telling you about the benefits of sourcing moringa from Senegal. The next minute he’s taking you on the tour of how konjac travels through the human digestive system.

Shakeology® THE HEALTHIEST MEAL OF THE DAY®

While intelligence obviously plays a role in Darin’s knowledge base, another reason that he knows so darn much what goes into Shakeology is his over-the-top passion. Traveling the world to discover the healthiest, most ethical way to source ingredients and then figuring out how to combine them in synergistic, beneficial ways isn’t just something he does for a paycheck. The man loves his job.

Darin OlienThis month, Beachbody adds a new product to the Shakeology line: Chocolate Vegan Shakeology. Taking cues from its sister vegan Tropical Strawberry Shakeology, the new drink features several groovy new superfoods, including moringa, coconut flower nectar, luo han guo, Himalayan salt, and konjac. In order to tell you all about them, we took a page from Darin’s playbook and sought out the best possible source: Darin. But unlike the Shakeology Hunter, we didn’t have to traverse the globe to do it. Here’s what he had to share.

Tell us about the fancy new stuff that’s been added to Shakeology.

I’ll start with the wonderful miracle tree, one of my favorite rediscoveries, the moringa oleifera. It’s possibly one of the greatest superfoods I’ve ever come across. It can grow in a lot of different places because of its ability to uptake nutrients from soils. So you get high chlorophyll, you get about 35 active antioxidants and up to 96 active phytochemicals, and then you’ve got some of the fun micronutrients like really high vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and—here’s the kicker—it’s got all the essential amino acids.

It’s one of those things that makes formulation really easy because it’s so full and it’s got all of the data on it. Johns Hopkins has studied it for a long time. I’ve been looking into it for about 4 years—every day a new country pops up where they can grow it because it’s turned into a cash crop opportunity.

Why do you think it took so long to be discovered?

I don’t know. It grows really easily but it’s hard to process if you want all those constituents. You have a 30-minute window to capture all of those nutrients in it to the best of your ability. As soon as you start whacking off those leaves, you have to get it washed and dried like that.

You mentioned how it absorbs from the soil quite a bit. That obviously means you need to be pretty careful because you can absorb bad things too.

Absolutely. With our industrial world, it’s very tricky. You always have to test the soil. In these kinds of areas that Beachbody sources from, often in the middle of nowhere, you don’t have to worry about that, but certainly as moringa—or any other commodity—comes up, everyone’s going to jump into the game. You can put a moringa plant next to a railroad track in India and it’s going to grow fine, but it’s going to pick up all kinds of bad stuff.

Why did we choose Senegal for sourcing moringa?

We’re kind of going off the heels of moringa expert Dr. Lowell Fuglie. He found out that the soil qualities, the mineral qualities, the temperature, and the climate are the best in Senegal—and he went all over the world! Also, the labor issues in Senegal are solid and the relative cost is cheaper for us, but they get a higher wage than in the other commodities. So you’ve got all those things.

Let’s talk about coconut flower nectar next.

Coconut BlossomCoconut flower nectar—the blood, basically, of the coconut tree. So it’s not coconut water powder; it’s from the tree itself, coming off the flower of the coconut. You literally cut where the flower would come out and this liquid comes out. The interesting thing about coconut flower nectar is its very low glycemic index. It has amino acids, it’s got brain activators, and so it’s got this whole array of other qualities. It’s just incidentally a sweetener.

The great thing about formulation is that you find these things that have pleomorphic effect, not just a linear effect. So you’re not just using coconut flower because it’s sweet. You’re also putting it in there because it has other synergistic qualities. It’s doing other things; it’s able to create and have a different effect on the body than just a sweetener.

So when you’re putting all these ingredients together, you’re trying to find combinations that work synergistically?

Yes. I think one plus one equals 13 when you formulate. You make sure that the macro perspective is being honored—the fats, the proteins, the amino acids, the carbs—and that they’re delivered in a synergistic way. Then you can continue to go down the rabbit hole and say things like, “I’ll add moringa because now that’s got 7 times the amount of calcium than milk does. I can add my camu in and that’s got 30% of vitamin C in it from its powdered forms.” And sometimes you don’t know, so you have to move along on the formula; get it and then test it. It can be quite daunting. Sometimes they come together, and now you’re getting a different effect. It can be surprising.

Let’s talk about luo han guo.

The Chinese have been using that for 10,000 years, not as a sweetener, but to regulate some of the systems of the body. It has a cooling effect on the body. Again, this is one of those things where it’s a digestive aid, a diabetic supporter, and oh, by the way, it’s incredibly sweet—500 times sweeter than sugar.

In the field, for every 100 kilos of it you get 1 kilo of powder. So it’s a very, very expensive process and challenging in that way, so it has a limitation as well. The challenge is how much you can push it. There’s no toxicity danger, but if you use too much, it will turn your body off to the sweetness. So you have limits and, again, even just the sweetening system alone has got so many healing properties to it. You’re not just throwing things in there to sweeten it, you’re going for what other effects it can have and contribute to the formula. That’s why the new Shakeology has a range of sweeteners. It’s like an orchestra.

How about the Himalayan salt?

Himalayan salt, oh my God, you’re going to have to rein me in. One of the greatest superfoods, one of the greatest things we need for our body, unrefined salt. Not to be confused with table salt, the stripped down, neurotoxic salt that causes people to say, “Don’t use so much.” They’re absolutely right; don’t use that salt on the table. Use unrefined salt. We need it for hydration. In this formula it’s an alchemist. It’s delivering over 70 trace minerals. We need those minerals, but we need them in the right form, in the food form, in the crystal form—in this form we’re talking about the size of the molecule—so that our cells can absorb them without your body needing additional mechanisms to break them down.

There’s also so much that can be said about salt itself. If you don’t have salt, your whole primary operating system will not work. We are a super conductor, our body is a superconductor with 70 trillion batteries, which are cells, and if you don’t have salt and electrolytes, those systems don’t work, and then you use glycogen in the cells and acidify. You don’t know it’s happening, you just know you’re not feeling so great; you get adrenal fatigue, your cholesterol goes up, and your immune system doesn’t work, so this is a very cellular alchemist necessity. And in the formula perspective, it’s really interesting because it stretches out sugars.

Stretches out sugars?

It enhances the sweetness and dampens the astringent. I even put salt on my salad, right? The negative reports have nothing to do with unrefined salt.

Is there any concern that Himalayan salt is a finite resource, since there’s only so much in the mountains?

Not in our lifetime, not in about a hundred million lifetimes. They’re big mountains.

How about konjac?

Initially, we went after it because it was a great replacement for the xantham and guar gum. But the konjac root fits right in because it has a multidimensional effect. It has a wonderful effect on the cholesterol of the body, it buffers and supports the digestive system as a whole, and in the formulation it creates the mouth feel; it blends, it pulls together. It also has a very functional effect in a digestive way.

How does it work, exactly, in your digestive track?

Konjac and its functional ingredient, glucomannan, are hydrophilic, meaning it likes water. When you add water, it will then absorb it and then bind itself to the other ingredients, creating a micro gel. And that’s what creates the smoothie effect and the thickening effect of Shakeology. It’s a very similar thing as it goes through the body. So there’s a lot of insoluble fiber action. It can help slow some of the sugar absorption down, and it can help coat the digestive system with a positive effect as opposed to the acidic effect of processed foods. In your mouth, it’s very supportive with the amylase and the digestive enzymes. In your intestines, it’s very supportive and helps replenish the mucosal lining.

So you’re happy with the new formulations?

Yes, but if it was up to me . . . well, it’s very hard to stop formulating.

Gazpacho Soup Recipe

Cool Summer Soup

It’s summer and the mercury is rising. The last thing any of us is in the mood for is a hot, steaming bowl of chicken noodle or miso soup—which is too bad, because for those of us who are keeping an eye on our calories, soup can be filling, nutritious, delicious, and most importantly, low in calories and fat. But cheer up, soup lovers, we don’t have to wait for the first cold winds of autumn to bust out the soup bowls. By borrowing a couple of pages from the cookbooks of our friends across the Atlantic, we can keep a fridge full of refreshingly cool, healthy, soupy goodness.

Gazpacho

GazpachoGazpacho is a traditional soup from the Andalusian area of Spain. It is generally made with a tomato base and can include onion, celery, bell pepper, garlic, olive oil, vinegar, lemon juice, and stale bread to thicken it. It was served memorably in the Spanish film Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, where the suicidal heroine blended her gazpacho with a bottle of sleeping pills and accidentally served it with hilarious results. Gazpacho can be made in a blender (though we recommend omitting the sleeping pills), or for those with knife skills, it can be made chunky style, with the vegetables diced into small pieces. The ingredient list can be as varied as both your imagination and your produce department allow. Try steering toward fresh vegetables and low-calorie ingredients. If you want to give yourself a protein boost, you can garnish the soup with some chopped, boiled egg white or diced lean ham.

Gazpacho

  • 4 cups tomato juice
  • 6 fresh or canned whole tomatoes, peeled and finely chopped
  • 1 cucumber, peeled and chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 cup diced jicama
  • 3 stalks celery, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
  • Fresh squeezed lemon juice to taste
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Tabasco sauce to taste
  • Dash Worcestershire sauce
  • Minced chives, parsley, or cilantro for garnish

Combine all ingredients in pitcher or blend to desired consistency. Refrigerate overnight to allow flavors to blend. Serve with chives, parsley, and/or cilantro as a garnish. Makes 8 servings.

My Story (Part 1)

img.jpg

I am Brigitte Linford and I am alive today because I KEPT MOVING FORWARD.
Literally.

I had a happy childhood.  I grew up in SouthEast Idaho in a nice home with brothers and sisters and parents who loved me and loved one another.  It was the setting for a picture perfect life.  And for the most part – it was.

That is until I reached Sixth Grade. I hit puberty and suddenly I fell into a deep depression that consumed me.  Instead of writing silly love letters to boys and chasing them at recess, I distanced myself and wrote suicide letters.  I remember filling my Lisa Frank diary with letter after letter apologizing to my family for my impending departure.  All written in a secret code I had made up of symbols and signs.

I would set the date for my grand exit time and time again.  But there was a flicker of hope inside me that kept me going.  I felt as if God was telling me that I wouldn’t feel this way forever.  I felt like God had a plan for me. I just needed to hang on and better days would come.

Those better days never came though.

I battled severe depression all throughout Junior High and High School.  I did my best to hide it, but I desperately wanted help and relief.  My mom would tell me that there was a reason I had this depression.  She said there was a purpose.  She said that someday I would be able to help someone else because of the things I was going through.  Again, I clung to that idea. I would dream of the day I was free from the burden of depression and able to strengthen someone else.  That dream kept me alive.

I graduated from High School in 2000 and moved to Utah to attend Brigham Young University.  I had hoped college would be my time to shine, but things only got worse.  Every passing year seemed worse than the first.  Partly, because with each passing year my already small group of friends got smaller as one-by-one they married and moved on.

After four years of college I found myself alone.  No friends whatsoever, living with a group of girls I barely knew.  I was in a relationship with a controlling, manipulative, abusive, egotistical guy.  And I was literally in the depths of despair.  There are no other words to describe that time of my life.

In January 2004 the only person I associated with abandoned me.  My abusive boyfriend had determined I was worthless because I changed the passwords on my email account, thereby proving to him that I was a “cheating wh*re”.  (In his words)

I was all alone.  My friends were all gone and I did not have a relationship with my parents at the time.  I had no one.

So I retreated.

I sat in my little 10 X 10 apartment bedroom and did absolutely nothing.  When my roommates were home I would hide.  I would hide under a pile of clothes on the floor or underneath my bed.  I would just lay there with my heart racing and beating wildly in fear that someone would find me.  My roommates would occasionaly knock on my door, open it, and walk in – looking for their lost roommate.  But they didn’t really care about me – and why would they ?  We were only acquantences.

This lasted for 4 long days.  Finally I decided that all I really needed was someone to talk to.  A friend.  Someone to offer a little bit of hope perhaps.  I had no one to talk to and I desperately needed someone there.

The next morning when my roommates left for school I got in my car and drove over to the hospital.  I was just looking for a counselor.  Someone I could PAY to listen to me and be my friend since I had no one else to talk to.  I talked to a counselor, but they wouldn’t let me leave.

So there I was – being held hostage in a mental institution.

I had officially gone crazy.

Three Feet From Gold – A Story About Perseverance

img.jpg

I’m reading a book right now by Napolean Hill called, Think and Grow Rich.

In the book Napolean Hill tells the story of R.U. Harby.  Harby’s uncle had gold fever, so he staked his claim and started digging.  After a lot of hard work, the uncle found a vein of ore, so he covered up his find and returned home to raise the money for the machinery that he would need to bring the ore to the surface.

They raised the money and Darby travelled with his uncle back to the site to make their fortune.  Things started well and before long, they had enough to clear their debts.  They were excited, everything from here on would be profit and things were looking good.

Then the supply of gold stopped.  The vein of ore had disappeared.  They kept on digging, but found nothing.  After a while, they quit in frustration and sold their machinery to a junk man for a few hundred dollars.

After they went home in disappointment, the astute junk man called in a mining engineer who checked the mine and calculated that there was a vein of gold just three feet from where Darby and his uncle had stopped digging.  The junk man went on to make millions from the mine.

Darby returned home, paid back everyone who had lent him money and was determined to learn from his mistake in giving up too soon.

He went on to become a phenomenally successful insurance salesman, more than recouping what he would have made from the gold mine.  He learned the lesson that you need to persevere through difficulties and stay focused if you are to become successful.

I think this story is great and teaches a wonderful lesson.  You have to keep moving forward!  Whenever you feel like giving up on your dream, remember that success may be RIGHT around the corner.  Sometimes even just three feet away.

What does Charity mean to you?

img.jpg

What does charity mean to you guys?  I spent the majority of last year focusing on charity and what that really means.  And even still, my definition of charity continues to change and evolve.  One thing is certain though – the more I study charity the more I can see how GREAT people truly are.

I know I say it over and over – but I believe if people could only see themselves the way I see them, and the way God sees them, then they would go for that CRAZY goal.  They would NEVER give up.  Their life would CHANGE!

So to me – this picture defines what charity means.  I see a God like potential in others and because of that, I know they are capable of achieving BIG goals and dreams.  I can only HOPE that OTHERS see that in themselves.

Be the BEST version of you.
